Arctic drilling rig Kulluk passes Magnolia

A giant arctic drilling rig Kulluk made its way into Puget Sound today, after a long journey from Dutch Harbor. Western Towboat Company has been pulling the rig since July 1st and will get technical improvements in Elliott Bay.

These are some pictures sent to us by Rachel Shrewsbury of Western Towboat Company as it passed by Magnolia.

To read more about the Kulluk, check out the West Seattle Blog write-up.

  1. I watched it come in! It moved slowly and quickly at the same time…it was strange. There were two lead tug boats that seemed to be pulling the structure via cable, and then there was also a tug pushing from the rear with two back-up tugs trailing close behind. I thought it was interesting also that the arctic drill rig gets a Coast Guard and Police boat escort.?
