Smashing Pumpkins on Dravus

All that remains of a Saturday night filled with rampaging vandals is a Magnolia street littered with the detritus of broken Halloween dreams. Callers to Magnolia Voice saw the West Dravus Street hill littered with orange carcasses otherwise waiting for the decorative carvings of children.

No word if police were called to investigate.

  1. Sorry to say, but why do people put out pumpkins anymore? I mean teenagers smash them predictably every year. That is one reason they have Halloween in the Village…so individual houses can shut down the “candy for everyone” routine and then have the teenagers show up late playing like they are five year olds…and vandalizing if they don’t like the selection. I remember when buses used to bring people up to the bluff and unload kids to go house to house for candy. Consolidating the candy part in the Village suits me fine….and put your pumpkins inside in the window if that is so important to you. Dravus is slippery with all the pumpkin mess…how much money did people pay for what is obviously going to happen?

    1. Why give in and feel compelled to give up a great tradition, because a few vandals spoil it for a few? There are hundreds of residents in Magnolia with pumpkins on their porches. Because a dozen or so are vandalized, everyone should simply give up the tradition? Kids ringing on by door bell is a welcome respite from WASHPIRG, Jehovahs Witness and magazine sales people… 🙂

      1. Well, because there are two ways to see it. If its a tradition you like, then accept that the smashing comes with the tradition…always been that way. (Always enjoy the complacent few so secure in their neighborhoods without smashing…life will hit you all in some way you weren’t hoping, not just the people on Dravus) And if spending your money in that way is worth the tradition, go for it. I respect that, but for me I’d rather cook the pumpkin and give it to someone as a food that throw away money for things that are automatically garbage. Want to talk about Christmas trees?

          1. The things that are fun for us are rarely what the rest of the crowd does. We are individuals. Hardly ever remember doing what the rest of the group found fun…if groups do it I’ve always figured it was suspect.

  2. I saw 3 police cars converge up dravus last night around 0930. Lost sight of them when they headed towards 28th. Was kind of curious what was up.

  3. Something sketchy happened on Dravus? Shocker. That street is like the sketch backbone of the neighborhood. I’m not sure this unfortunate behavior (which is almost as old as trick or treating itself) warrants retreating inside our houses and putting our pumpkins behind glass. 95% of the pumpkins put out in Magnolia make it through the 31st just fine. Again, consider the location.

  4. Didn’t this happen last year as well? I’d be careful parking on dravus in october, rolling pumpkins could do some serious damage.

  5. Trick-or-Treat at my house. I have a huge bowl of candy for all the kids. Don’t let the tradition die. I’ll even sacrifice my pumpkin if it makes you feel good.

  6. Today was the greatest day i’ve ever known, cant live for tomorrow, tomorrows much too long.
