Tree ordinance meeting coming up

If you are concerned about street trees, the Seattle Department of Transportation wants to hear from you.
Several meetings are scheduled this month and next about what defines a street tree and how the city should plan with trees. A street tree is defined as any tree growing in a city right-of-way, whether it is improved or unproved. In 2007 SDOT and other agencies developed a strategic plan to manage street trees, or the urban forest. In the plan is the goal of achieving 30 percent tree canopy cover by 2037 as a way to increase the environmental, social, and economic benefits that trees bring to Seattle residents.
A proposed ordinance will address street tree protection and preservation. Residents are encouraged to learn more about the ordinance and to comment on it at neighborhood meetings. The nearest meeting is in Ballard, Wednesday, Jan. 11 at the Ballard Community Center at 6020 28th Ave. N.W. To learn more check out the urban forestry website here.
