Magnolia Voice has new editor

For the past four years in my capacity as editor of The Magnolia News, I have come to know the remarkable sense of family in Magnolia. Everybody knows everybody. Kids going to Catharine Blaine know those who dance at the Magnolia Community Center who know those performing at the Magnolia Theatre who know those playing ball in Magnolia Little League who know those going to school at Lawton and run into each other every year trick-or-treating at shops in the Village.

I?ve come to know staff and customers at Upper Crust, Georgiana at Magnolia?s Bookstore, teachers and administrators at Blaine such as Molly and Heather? and the remarkable Tigers (I remember a?fourth grader unleashing rockstar guitar licks during the talent show). Volunteering to help students with their reading and writing, I came to know Kathy the librarian at Lawton who still keeps her home-away-from-home in tip-top shape. Francesca still represents the market and Heidi remains queen of the Heron Habitat Helpers. Jen and Nanette keep Serendipity humming, and the Magnolia branch of the Seattle library system remains one of the more architecturally stunning in the city. And Karen?s Place Playground outside the community center is a fantastic place to sit back and relax. My kids love it and have scooped up plenty of candy there and on the tennis courts during the Easter egg hunt.

One of the places I love best is the shoreline next to the Lighthouse. Windswept and strewn with driftwood on one side, the lighthouse beach offers views of downtown, and on the calmer northern edge pictures of Golden Gardens and rocking sailboats. I took last year?s holiday greeting card photos there.

Last year’s holiday greeting

Views are a big part of Magnolia, the island neighborhood that seems so far-flung yet so connected to Seattle.

As a husband and father of three, I relate to Magnolia?s sense of family. And as Loree has since the Voice?s inception, I too want to maintain Magnolia?s sense of community with the news of the day both big and small. My wife, kids and I are planning on getting a family dog this year. So, we?ll see you on the sidewalks.

Best,

Myke Folger (AKA Michael)
