Limited hours for Magnolia Community Center this summer

The Magnolia Community Center is going to have a modified schedule for programs this summer.  There are a number of repair projects to the building that make the change necessary.  Crews will be working on the Catharine Blaine  roof,  and repairing damage that was done to the community center gym from the electrical fire that took place in April.

Beginning June 27 the community center will operate from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.  The construction project at the school includes asbestos abatement around windows located on the roof, and will be noisy.

Here are the changes that are taking place as a result of the work:

  • The community center summer camp will move to Discovery Park and the Daybreak Star Center at Discovery Park.
  • Most morning classes will move to Queen Anne Community Center, 1901 1st Ave. W.
  • Many drop-in programs, such as bridge and quilting, will not be relocated and are canceled for the summer.
  • During the modified hours, Magnolia Community Center will continue to have evening programs.
  • The evening fencing program will move to Queen Anne Community Center.
  • Teen activities take will take place as usual.
  • Most morning Lifelong Recreation programs are canceled but many of the same programs are offered at Queen Anne, Loyal Heights, and Ballard Community Centers.

Once the gym work is complete on July 18, Magnolia Community Center will be open from 3:15 ? 8 p.m. for regular classes and drop-in activities. After the first few weeks of construction, staff from the Parks Department will evaluate the actual impact of the school construction project and determine whether Magnolia can return to normal operating hours.
