When I spoke with a man who was working on the project, he seemed positive ?that the problem will be fixed soon.? Luckily we?have tons of amazing coffee options in the Village!

  1. OMG…NO! Where will people get coffee in the Village? It’s the end of the world as we know it.

  2. People ought to be seeking out a local option regardless. The fact that sbux is overrun while local shops are wide open is pathetic.

    1. Sbux is local. It may be a global company now, but it started here and employs many of your neighbors. (Thousands more, if you count the store employees, LOL!)

      1. I can promise you that a much higher percentage of every dollar you spend at Uptown (or the bakery or serendipity, etc.) stays locally in Seattle than every dollar you spend at Sbux. Everyone working at Home Depot, Best Buy, and every other soul-sucking big box store, chain restaurant, etc. lives here, but the profit dollars generated at those places leave town…

        1. I’m sure your neighbors who get their entire paychecks from there have a different opinion.

          1. I agree. Home Depot specifically is now famous for hiring people for just under full time so they can get the hours and not pay any benefits. They, as you (think harder) so aptly put it “suck.” But they also provide some jobs, though the kind of low quality jobs found everywhere these days for those who are not in high tech or gen-tech industries. All Starbucks jobs or Uptown jobs benefit the people locally here. Where the owners invests or spend their money isn’t your issue….just the jobs offered here. However, if you vote your conscience, then don’t buy anything at Costco or Home Depot or the despised Walmart (I never would go into that store). But in reality, just face it…for people who aren’t able to get the higher paying jobs…some jobs are at least JOBS.

          2. I believe think harder is referring to the dollars spent in our community not on employing people. SBUX, SUBWAY, ETC ETC… I’m pretty sure I have never seen any of them planning or helping with any of the wonderful community events we have in our village. I have seen plenty of our small business owners giving back to the community that supports them… just saying.

          3. I have a friend who went from a great paying career before the recession to having to work at Home Depot, using them as just one example. They exploit/employ people in their late fifties who are squeezed out of the economy now…immigrants as well…anyone who cannot find work elsewhere. And they definitely do invest in their/our community for all the selfish, self serving reasons places like that do. And you are right, its not the same as the small businesses that serve their micro-neighborhoods and deserve our patronage. But the more big companies there are thriving in Western Washington providing jobs the better, and more jobs are provided even by those sucky big companies than the wonderful but small impact local shops. So as much as I hate their presence (I shop at Ace if at all possible), I understand that though they provide terrible jobs, they are paying jobs for people who cannot find jobs elsewhere. They exploit them, but at least they employ them. I love our small neighborhood, but as far as economic impact to help Seattle? Starbucks hands down. And unless it is B.S. too, they take measures to help the environment.

          4. You missed the point entirely. I’m not talking about the benefits of having employed neighbors. Duh, that’s self-evident and basic – everyone is for healthy levels of employment – but the issue is what types of employers do we want in the neighborhood. I’m talking about the fact that large multi-national companies don’t keep their PROFITS here (which means those same profits don’t get spent here). There is a massive amount of research and data that shows this to be true (and the numbers are stunning actually) – and the results can be devastating.
