Gas siphoning on the the hill

We have gotten a couple of emails about stolen gas in the last 2 days at MV. Here is one:

Just wanted to let you know that I came out this morning (I live?on 31st Ave W) to my gas tank on my car wide open and the cap unscrewed.? It appears that about a ? tank of gas was siphoned out of my car last night.? Pretty upsetting stuff.? I?m going to report it to the Police as well in hopes that we get more nighttime coverage here?me and my neighbors consistently are targets of car-related crimes at night.

The other incident occured near 33rd and?Clise. Has this happened elsewhere in Magnolia?

  1. About 2 years ago this happened on a pretty regular basis for us over on 33rd and Emerson. We got a lock cap and that seemed to help.

  2. Sorry for your loss (of petrol) but are you the last person on Earth without a locking gas cap/cover? That feature has been standard on most vehicles for over a decade. If your car is more than 10 years old, then this misfortune is to be expected. The universe will not allow that kind of hippie thrift to go unpunished. Hope they didn’t steal your cassette deck too!

    1. My car is brand new–less than a year old. No locking gas cap. Don’t make assumptions…you know what they say….

    2. A few years ago I purchased a locking cap for my truck. I was surprised to find my gas tank empty one morning, but the cap still in place. Turns out someone climbed under my truck and cut open a fuel line to syphon out my gas; so instead of costing me $30 for the half a tank of gas I lost, it cost a little over $300 to have the line replaced. A locking cap isn’t always the best solution.
Regarding the first comment in this thread… if you want to make a suggestion, then make a simple suggestion. Don’t be a jerk a mock someone’s misfortune.

  3. We had this happen about two weeks ago at 33rd and Bertona. They took about 1/4 the tank

  4. Magnolia is going to continue to be targeted for crime because the neighborhood is perceived to be a place where rich people live. If you want to take a bite out of crime then consider installing a surveillance camera on your property on in your car such that it records activities either while your at work or in the early in the am when everyone is asleep. The police can’t be everywhere at once so i think its up to us to help them out by providing them with information. If only 15 people in our neighborhood did this we would catch some criminals. The perception of the neighborhood is not going to change and the criminals are going to keep coming.
