The family of Osprey nesting on the railway bridge just west of the Ballard Locks are spreading their wings.
Photographer Cecil Tyler gave us permission to post the photos and says I “hope it promotes the thought of preserving the nest for future generations of osprey and the enjoyment it brings to anyone who will take the time to look up.”
Shannon Down originally sent us these pictures and has been watching them since they started building their next this past spring. “I’m enjoying watching them and feel a part of their lives,” she says.
“I do not want BNSF to tear the nest down like last winter as next year the birds might just not bother to rebuild,” Tyler says.

WOW, really cute and a bit deadly I’ve never seen osprey. But I’ve seen bird on their nest on a tree I just don’t know what bird it is, but they don’t look as scary as that osprey on the last photo. Looks like about to attack that one taking the photo.
Beautiful! Thanks to Tyler!
Makes me wonder – is an osprey large and powerful enough to carry off a cat?
99 percent of an Osprey’s diet is fish, hence the nickname “fish hawk” or seahawk. They would not catch a cat, even if they were large enough to carry it off (which they are not). Even a Bald Eagle would have a tough time with a large adult cat, and eagles are much larger than an Osprey.
