Car drives through Bartell Drugs

A driver smashed her car into Bartell Drugs this morning.

It appears that the driver put the car into drive instead of reverse and ended up driving right through the window towards the check stands.

We are told that the driver was shaken but not badly injured.  There are reports that one person who was outside the store was taken to the hospital as a result of the accident but there are no indications of serious injuries.  None of the workers in the store were hurt.

A big thanks to KKennell for sending us the photos!

    1. Yup…they were really old too. After it happened I heard they tried to blame it on someone backed up and pushed their car in (lol wut), then later changed their story to “oh I hit the wrong pedal” after no dents were on the back of their car.

  1. the handicapped parking should be facing the street this isn’t the first time

  2. I always thought that bartels needed a drive thru! All we need now is a McDonalds and I’ll be a happy man

  3. OMG! Glad to hear no one was seriously hurt AND IHope the makeup cases were not damaged.

  4. Let Bartell’s know this is a ridiculous hazard which would be easily rectified by installing concrete barriers or planters. They are wide-open to a lawsuit. Apparently all they listen to is dollars……and the poor clerks! Lost track of how many times this happened over the years.

    1. so do you think that every retailer should have Jersey barriers around their stores? Then one day when you walk into one ,because you were talking on your cell phone, the reatailer would be “wide open” for a law suit? Come one people! Stop trying to blame others for things that you are responsible for. One point I agree on is it happens alot. Its always an elderly driver who made an error. I dont see you making comments about taking the licenses away from our seniors…instead you are trying to blame a retailer who is serving the community. hummmm think about it. I agree there are no easy answers. Nobody wants to give up the right to drive. I would imagine its like giving up your freedoms, but when your freedoms could be fatal for someone else one might want to reconcider!

      1. I don’t think it’s about assigning blame. We probably aren’t going to stop elderly people from driving OR visiting drugstores OR parking in the handicapped spaces. Maybe a more practical solution would be for Bartell to put some planters in. Especially if this is a recurrent problem. Just sayin’.

      2. I completely agree with you, the responsibility falls on the driver, not on everyone else in society. One of the key problems, however (and apologies if this seems nit-picky), relates to a statement you make here — one’s “right to drive.” Driving is NOT a right, it’s a privilege; and if less people treated it as a “right” (one that is accompanied by being able to do so while cellphoning, texting, shaving, putting makeup on, etc.), perhaps that might lead to a few less accidents. As you say, if your freedom negatively impacts others, you’ve overstepped the bounds of that freedom.

      3. Man, this is just a basic foolproof design. Used in the world WIDELY. I bet you were saved several times in your life because somebody actually foolproofed the product. I’m an industrial designer, and I know what it is. And yes, often times you won’t even notice this design.

    1. And if your bike DOES hit the curb and you go flying into the windows, you can get up, brush yourself off, and say, “I meant to do that.”

  5. I was with my toddlers a few years back and missed getting hit by less than 5 seconds. Does someone need to die before Bartell’s does something. It’s scary! Be careful!

    1. Why stop at Bartells? Obviously every business, park and home should have concrete barriers erected to keep out incompetent drivers. … Or maybe it would just be easier and cheaper to make sure licensed drivers are still capable of driving safely?

  6. Time for Bartell’s to realize that they need to install something from homeland security to protect their underpaid employees from these accidents that happen all too often. The employees were quite professional but no doubt shaken by this latest attempt to make it a drive-thru again.

I overheard someone say that the driver recently lost her husband and may well have had her mind on other things. I personally am uber-cautious around Volvo drivers….guess this is another incident to enforce that theory… where are Click and Clack when you need a comment?

    1. No offense but if you are having emotional issues that could impact your ability to drive, don’t drive.

Seriously people, start taking responsibility for your own actions. I know that’s the hip thing today to blame everyone but yourself but remember that driving is a privilege and not a right.

Was her husband Osama? O SNAP

        1. A couple of points for justindignation. Was that your mother driving? If so how could you let her drive in such a state and endanger others? If it was not your mother, how does ScatCat?s comment impact her?

          1. You know, you could have started that reply with “Sorry for your loss, but…” Just saying…some manners would be nice.

          2. Gee Lawtondad, based on your admonishment I guess everyone should start every comment to me with “sorry about the loss of your spouse; sorry about the loss of your mother; sorry about the loss of your father” for the rest of my life. We all have losses. We don’t need to hold everyone else accountable to honor our losses for the rest of our lives. And if you read “igdination’s” response there’s really no nexus of that person’s loss to the matter at hand. Next time ask, like I had the fortitude to do, before you jump in with prejudicial comments…. Just saying.

          3. I have a friend who worked many years at Washington State DOL and he’d tell me the horror stories there about having to deal with the elderly. For example:

The elderly would bring their middle-aged children in to argue, pressure, intimidate and even bribe the licensing employees into giving them a license. They couldn’t possibly handle driving their parents around or want to offend their parents with the truth that they couldn’t drive.

The elderly would spend all of their free time post exam failure to call their elected officials, DOL supervisors and management complaining about how they got a raw deal and demand a retest or reinstatement of their license.

Sadly a good amount of elderly folks grew up in the segregation days and would accuse minority DOL employees of racism when being denied privileges.

Finally, the absolute worst which happened several times where people would SOIL THEMSELVES during the driving exam. I kid you not, examiners would have to pop open the door and dry heave on the side of the road. I guess its the stress or something causes the elderly to lose it.

Look, you cant fly an airplane past 65. Why should you be able to drive?

          4. Erm…I know several people over the age of 65 who fly airplanes legally. Just sayin’.

          5. Pilots can definitely fly over 65. But pilots are also required to have a physical exam every year or two to make sure they can handle it.

          6. Commercial pilots have mandatory retirement ages. Private pilots don’t.

          7. No it was not my mom. I work so I can’t take her everywhere but certainly try. Scat’s comment about the lady’s husband being Osama was in very poor taste.

        2. Dear Just, You have to recognize there are many people that think that just b/c they are online they can be rude and ugly to people. There is a huge amount of meaningless commentary by such people out there. It is too bad and there is nothing that can be done about it. It’s part of the coarsening of society in general that is taking place.

          Best to your mom.

          1. What would you like done about it Elizabeth? The Internet is a privilege, not a right. Same with this forum. Perhaps you should consider moving to Australia or China, where the Internet is highly regulated.

I for one enjoy our country and our freedoms here. Rude on the Internet or not.

God Bless America and God Bless President Obama.

  7. Who cares if this happened in the same place? How is it Bartells’ fault? Old woman, got confused, hit drive and boom! Sorry to say but she should have her license revoked.

  8. “It’s The Little Old Lady From Pasadena”……VRRRROOOMMMM….crash
