Our sister site MyBallard reports that Magnolia residents will soon have two Red Mill locations nearby. In addition to the Interbay location, the popular burger joint is getting ready to open in Ballard at the old Totem House location across from the Ballard Locks at 3058 NW 54th St.
Along with the traditional Red Mill burgers and onion rings, they?ll have fish & chips and chowder at the Ballard Locks location. The plan right now is to open in September with an expanded indoor seating area and a larger outdoor seating area. This will be the third location for Red Mill.

Do they accept other forms of payment now besides cash? Let’s hope so. Join this century, Red Mill. Great grub, but pushing your eccentricities onto your customers can be annoying.
Or it’s because they don’t want to give away a decent percentage of their money to credit card processing companies? It’s not like small restaurants are already swimming in the profit margin.
Define “decent percentage”.
Most small restaurants I’ve ever heard of run a profit margin on par with supermarkets… 1%, 3% at the high end, when this stuff is in the news. Most interchange fees are like 1%-3%. I’d rather they keep on cash only if it lets them keep expanding.
Just raise prices by 1% to cover credit card fees, and attract more customers. This is a cost of doing business, and all retailers pass it on to customers. Accepting credit cards doesn’t mean cutting into profit margin.
I routinely pass this place by because I don’t carry cash, which is a bummer because their food is so good.
So the rest of us have to pay higher prices because you can’t bother to carry cash? Although, I personally have no problem when small businesses pass on the fee directly to only those using that service.
Yes. Welcome to the 21st century.
The beauty of the free market system. Rather than complain here, where Red Mill will never see it, tell them directly. If they don’t change, then vote with your feet and spend your money elsewhere.
I personally don’t have a problem with not taking credit cards, it is a small purchase and not a big deal…and cc fees are increasingly a drag on profits, it is much more than a simply 1%.
I totally agree, it’s very annoying to have to pay with cash at Red Mill. They wouldn’t be a cash-only establishment to avoid reporting all of their revenue to the IRS, would they?
I like the fact that it is “Cash Only” still. Keep a $20.00 in your pocket just in case the need for a delicious greasy burger hits you!
They take checks! Or, go across the street to QFC and get cash!! 🙂
paying with cash or check has never been a problem for me.
but standing in line at red mill… well, thats not so fun. so, as long as they are opening another location, and a set of the population feels totally put out by their policies… well, that means less of a line for me.
success!
Well, perhaps that will lessen lines at the other two locations. This location will have to be a no for me though…I’m allergic to seafood and if they have “fish & chips” that means the fish will be fried in the same oil as the french fries, meaning no fries for me.
