Lawton Elementary recently completed the annual World Cultures Celebration and this year the focus was on Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific Island nations.
For the past seven years, Lawton kids study a different continent or region for five weeks, with each class choosing a country within that continent. The goal of the program is for students to ?travel the world? by 5th grade. Since 2004, they have traveled to Asia, Africa, Latin America, South America, Australia, the Pacific Island nations, Antarctica, Europe, and North America
The course of study included a weekday marketplace where students, staff and visitors got to sample foods from different regions, multiple dance assemblies and an open house where families and friends were welcomed to the view the displays and have the students share all that they learned.
Thanks to Graham Syed for the photos of the great student displays!
