The Seattle PI is reporting that Seattle City Light has identified 11 problem streetlights in Magnolia as part of their investigation into contact-voltage problems. This issue first came to light with the death of a dog on Queen Anne on Thanksgiving as reported by our sister site Queen Anne View.
Sam (pictured above) was electrocuted and passed away after stepping onto an energized groundcover metal plate on Queen Anne Ave North while on a walk with his owner.
Seattle City Light began an investigation of more than 20,000 metal streetlights and 10,000 ground covers. So far 56 hazardous streetlights and ground covers have been found in the city. The PI reports that the voltage in the Magnolia discoveries ranged from 86 to 120, enough to kill. No injuries have been reported, and crews cut off power and began repairs to faulty lamp heads and bad wiring.
Here are the locations in Magnolia with problems:
– Near 42nd Avenue West and West Glenmont Lane, 70 volts
– Near Montavista Place West and West McGraw Street (two streetlights, 68 volts and 43 volts)
– Near West Parkmont Place and 43rd Avenue West, 85 volts
– Near West Parkmont Place and Constance Drive West, 88 volts – Montavista Place W and Eyre Place W, 113 volts
– 38th Avenue W and Montavista Place W, 98 volts
– Morley Place W and Westmont Way W, 121 volts
– 30th Avenue W and W Hayes Street, 91 volts
– 30th Avenue W and W Garfield Street, 86 volts
– 26th Avenue W and W Dravus Street, 120 volts
So does this mean that these particular locations are now safe in the short-term due to having power cutoff and will be safe int he long-term due to permanent fixes?
To the owners of Sam: so sorry about your loss. He was a beautiful dog. I am sure he is missed as it’s clear you liked to hike with him.
